Chiefs' Clark Hunt Talks More Considerations For Native Americans

Clark Hunt said it is important to educate fans on what is hurtful to Native AmericansGETTY IMAGES

Chiefs Chair & CEO Clark Hunt said that "more alterations could be in store regarding the team's and fans' use of Native American imagery," according to Blair Kerkhoff of the K.C. STAR. Hunt "wasn't specific about what might be changed." But he said that the team's nickname and the name of Arrowhead Stadium "will likely stay the same." Hunt: "I'm sure there will be some steps we take down the road on other things related to our game-day production." He added, "The important thing on the entire subject is how important education has been. It's important to American Indians from a cultural heritage standpoint and just preserving their traditions. But it's also a way of educating our fans that these things are offensive to them." Hunt said that the team's name as well as the name of Arrowhead Stadium "'aren't things high on their list' when it comes to Native American groups' concerns surrounding the team" (K.C. STAR, 8/30).

NEW PERSPECTIVE: Hunt on whether he still prefers players to stand for the national anthem said that he "sees a difference between the climate now and three years ago." Hunt: "I would say that we're in a very different place as a country. These issues are important to our players. They're important to our coaching staff, our entire organization. This is the time to be sensitive. It's a time to listen. It's a time to understand. I recognize that around the league, there may be some kneeling that goes on." Hunt said he appreciates "how engaged the leaders on our team are." On the team's attempt to transform Arrowhead Stadium into a voting location for the November election, Hunt said, "That's one of their biggest issues -- voter registration and getting people out to vote. And so we've worked with them, and we're working with some organizations here locally to try to encourage people to get out to vote. We've made an effort to get all of our players registered to vote here. And the icing on the cake would be if we could have Arrowhead as a polling station" (K.C. STAR, 8/30).
