Nike Will Feature Andre Agassi-Inspired Collection At U.S. Open

The collection will tread the line between performance and leisure wear, featuring denim, neon and spandexNIKE

Nike is paying tribute to Andre Agassi through its "latest collection" of tennis apparel headed into the U.S. Open, and Agassi’s "signature style will be reprised for Nike’s current roster of athletes," according to Jessica Golden of CNBC.com. Nike is "marking the 30th anniversary" of its Challenge Court collection, which Agassi brought to the '90 U.S. Open. The collection will "tread the line between performance wear and leisure wear," featuring a "mix of denim, neon, spandex and the Challenge Court logo." Along with the "on-court basics, like shorts and polos," Nike will produce "logo-driven accessories and fresh colors." Nike first signed Agassi to a multimillion dollar contract in '88. This year's U.S. Open begins Aug. 31 (CNBC.com, 8/17).

BACK IN TIME: FORBES' Tim Newcomb wrote Agassi's on-court aesthetic "signified one thing: anti-establishment." And 30 years later, the look is "making a comeback" in Nike’s new collection. Agassi said of the '90 designs, "It just started with me being opinionated and Nike having a sense of being willing to push boundaries. ... I was just a teenager willing to take chances with a company also willing to take chances. We had some fun stuff over the years, and we get to relive it now" (FORBES.com, 8/17).
