NCAA Cancels Fall Championships as More Conferences Postpone Sports Seasons

NCAA president Mark Emmert announced on Twitter yesterday that fall championships will not be held due to the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement came as the Big East, Big South and Southland joined the growing list of college sports conferences to postpone competition due to the coronavirus pandemic. The decisions will impact multiple sports set to begin in the fall, including soccer, cross country and volleyball.

Both the Big South and Southland Conference will also delay college football competition until the spring (the Big East is a non-football conference). However, both the Big South and Southland will allow its members to play some non-conference games.

Of the 13 FCS Division I-AA college football conferences, only Ohio Valley and the Southern Conference have not announced plans to postpone. Out of the 10 FBS conferences, four (the Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West, and MAC) have announced that they will not play football this fall.
