People And Personalities: SNY Crew Lauded For Keeping Broadcasts Fun

In New York, Ken McMillan gives kudos to SNY's Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling "for providing levity" during Wednesday's Nationals-Mets game. The broadcast crew is "split into two adjoining booths" at Citi Field, and the announcers "could easily transmit notes via text or message program." However, they "decided to add a clothes-line conveyor in front of their booths." Hernandez and Darling "decided to use clothes pins to attach a t-shirt and even a chocolate chip cookie in a bag (which did not successfully cross over) to send over to Cohen" in a moment that was "truly fun to watch" (Middletown TIMES HERALD-RECORD, 8/14).

SHOW MUST GO ON: In Chicago, Jeff Agrest notes since July 28, NBC's Eddie Olczyk has been "living in a hotel near NBC Sports Network's studios in Stamford, Connecticut, where he's analyzing Stanley Cup playoff games nationally and for NBC Sports Chicago." Olczyk described the booth in which he calls games as "probably twice as big as a phone booth." It has "two monitors, a telestrator, a screen with four camera angles and a computer." Olczyk "ditched the all-12 monitor, which shows the entire ice surface, because it wasn't worthwhile on such a small screen." Still, he "praised the technical teams for making the broadcasts as normal as possible given all the moving parts" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/14).

WELCOME PERSPECTIVE: THE ATHLETIC's Meg Linehan notes Orlando Pride D Ali Krieger will join Orlando City's broadcast crew for the "remainder of the MLS season," providing "analysis and sideline reporting, plus digital content for the team’s social channels." The role "will be a side gig for Krieger, who's definitely still playing" for the Pride. Krieger on the recent influx of NWSL players covering MLS said, "It's refreshing to hear a different perspective, and a perspective from the women's game." She added, "It's really important to get that view, because sometimes it can get a little monotonous just with the same perspectives and the same views of the men's game" (THEATHLETIC.com, 8/13).
