People & Personalities: Ali Krieger Joins Orlando City Broadcast Crew

In Orlando, Julia Poe notes Orlando City fans "will hear a familiar voice on broadcasts throughout the rest of the Lions 2020 season" -- Orlando Pride D Ali Krieger. She will join the current broadcast crew of Evan Weston and Miguel Gallardo, "taking on the responsibilities of analysis and sideline reporting for the local broadcasts" on WRBW-Fox. Her first broadcast "will be after the team returns from the MLS is Back Tournament," and she will be "featured in other digital content for Orlando City." Krieger will "take the place of former analyst and sideline reporter Jenny Chiu" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 8/7).

USING HER VOICE: THE ATHLETIC's Ryan Clark noted TSN's Kayla Grey "feels open when it comes to talking about race and racism." She is the "first Black woman in Canada to host a show like SportsCentre." And while both TSN and Sportsnet "possess diversity," TSN is the "only one to have a Black woman existing in an on-air capacity." Grey "feels a responsibility to do more than deliver highlights or talk about the Toronto Raptors when called upon." She is "working toward getting more diversity and people of colour -- especially women -- to realize they can work in media" (THEATHLETIC.com, 8/6).

BASEMENT BROS: In Columbus, Allison Ward notes Blue Jackets color analyst Jody Shelley "joked during the TV broadcast" of the exhibition match against the Bruins last week that he and play-by-play announcer Jeff Rimer were "set up in the latter's basement." The team's broadcast crew is "currently working remotely from a basement of sorts -- the bowels of the lower-level of Nationwide Arena." Shelley had "never called a game from a monitor before last week," and veteran broadcaster Rimer "had only done it a few times for arena football early in his career." But the duo have "embraced the endeavor." The TV coverage "has at times shown where they are working" (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 8/7).
