UConn Cancels Its 2020 Football Season

The University of Connecticut has become the first FBS school to cancel its football season due to the coronavirus pandemic. UConn’s players will preserve their year of NCAA eligibility; the football team plans to return in 2021.

“The safety challenges created by COVID-19 place our football student-athletes at an unacceptable level of risk,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a statement.

The Huskies finished 2-10 last season while playing in the American Athletic Conference. Last month, UConn announced it was leaving the AAC and expected to compete as an independent program this season.

The school’s 2020 schedule had included matchups against Illinois, Indiana, Maine and Mississippi, but those games were already canceled due to scheduling decisions made by those team’s conferences. UConn’s football players will continue taking classes and have access to the school’s training facilities.
