Sources: NBA Bubble For Non-Orlando Teams Unlikely To Happen

There is "growing belief among the NBA's eight franchises not in Orlando that a second bubble site being built for minicamps and intrasquad scrimmages will not happen," according to sources cited by Charania & Amick of THE ATHLETIC. There also is "pessimism about in-market minicamps for group workouts happening as well." There was "optimism early and an initial dialogue about the possibility of playing in a second city (Chicago was the frontrunner)." There was "more hope about minicamps beginning in-market by mid-August," but it was "soon shattered." The league's Disney World restart has "gone smoothly thus far." But sources said that the NBPA "remains concerned about the safety concerns that would come with creating another location for the other eight teams to compete." While there had been "extensive discussion about the idea of scrimmages in a possible second bubble being televised, the possible upside of that business element is paltry compared to the revenue generated by the forthcoming playoff action in Orlando" (THEATHLETIC.com, 8/4). In N.Y., Marc Berman reports talks are "still ongoing" regarding a second NBA bubble. But sources "believe the NBA and union are still focused on the Orlando restart and making sure it continues to go smoothly." Knicks GM Scott Perry last week said that he is "working with the league on mini-camp talks and sounded like it would happen" (N.Y. POST, 8/5).
