Belichick Discusses Subway Commercial After NFL's QSR Deal

The NFL's recent deal to make Subway its official QSR "probably explains" why Patriots coach Bill Belichick was in Connecticut last month "filming a commercial" for the brand, according to Ben Volin of the BOSTON GLOBE. The sandwich chain "will be associated with the league’s youth initiatives -- the sponsor of the NFL Flag football league and a supporter of its NFL Play 60 campaign." Volin: "My middle-aged dad take: Couldn’t they have found a healthier sponsor than Subway?" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/2). In Boston, Greg Bedard noted Belichick's appearance benefited his self-titled foundation, which provides coaching and mentorship to young players. Belichick: “I had never done anything like that … we mentioned on the BBF website, it’s a difficult environment to raise money for charity and foundations, opportunity to spend a day to fund the initiatives in the foundation for student-athletes and other sports programs. … Appreciate the opportunity Subway gave me. It was a fun commercial to do. Everybody loves sandwiches. I know I’ll get killed in the rookie shows" (BOSTONSPORTSJOURNAL.com, 7/31). In Boston, Jim McBride noted a video of Belichick shooting the ad was "popular on social media" when it surfaced in July (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/1).
