MLB Players Can Now Be Suspended for Electronic Sign Stealing

MLB and the MLBPA have agreed to new rules for governing electronic sign stealing that grant the league power to suspend players who are caught using technology to steal signs. Suspended players will not receive pay or accumulate service time, according to The Athletic.

MLB determined last off-season that the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox had used video replay rooms to steal signs during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Former Astros GM Jeff Luhnow, former Astros manager A.J. Hinch, and former Red Sox manager Alex Cora were all suspended one year for their roles in the respective scandals.

Players were granted immunity by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, in part, out of fear that the MLBPA would file grievances if players were suspended without a specific rule covering those suspensions. The league’s new agreement with the union aims to prevent that from happening in the future.
