LSU Going Cashless For Concessions, Merchandise At Tiger Stadium

LSU fans will be able to buy concessions and merch using credit cards, Apple Pay and Android PayGETTY IMAGES

LSU is joining the trend of going cashless for concessions and merchandise transactions for its venues in '20. The Tigers are using their existing point-of-sale system, Appetize, to facilitate the move. Venue operators and teams say the pandemic has accelerated the cashless trend amid concerns about cash being a vector that could possibly spread coronavirus. Despite there being little actual evidence that cash can spread the disease, venue operators, payment vendors and others have admitted that going cashless is a part of what some in the industry call "cleaning theater." Before the pandemic, the reasons for venues to go cashless were varied. Because many college football stadiums are older, there could be costs associated with installing a cashless infrastructure, but LSU was able to use its current POS system for this move (Karn Dhingra, SBJ College). In Baton Rouge, Brooks Kubena notes fans will be "able to purchase concessions and merchandise using all major credit cards, Apple Pay and Android Pay." Tiger Cash "can only be used for concessions." LSU also said that it is "working on a prepaid card purchase option for people who don't have one of the four payment types available" (Baton Rouge ADVOCATE, 7/31). LSU also is going completely mobile for all tickets (THE DAILY).
