Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes Buys Minority Stake in Royals

MLB’s Kansas City Royals announced that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has become part of the team’s ownership. He joins a group led by Kansas City businessman John Sherman, who bought the Royals for a reported $1 billion in August.

After winning NFL MVP honors in 2018, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl LIV victory over the San Francisco 49ers in February. Earlier this month, the Chiefs signed Mahomes to a 10-year contract extension worth $503 million. That deal is the largest ever signed in North American sports and makes Mahomes the first athlete to sign a contract worth half a billion dollars.

Mahomes played both college football and baseball at Texas Tech his freshman year, before deciding to focus on football. His father, Pat Mahomes, pitched for seven teams over 11 MLB seasons, before retiring in 2003.
