Davis Love III Abruptly Leaving CBS Golf Commentator Role

Love III said his role with CBS was hard and that he found himself nervous on TVGETTY IMAGES

The experiment of having Davis Love III as a commentator on CBS "will come to an abrupt end this week," as the golfer "announced on social media that he has decided to focus on his golf and to spend more time at home," according to Adam Schupak of GOLFWEEK. Love was named a full-time member of the broadcast team in October, "coinciding with CBS's decision not to pick up the options on veteran commentators Gary McCord and Peter Kostis." At the time, CBS was "bullish that Love could help be part of its youth movement." Love was "quick to concede that he had a lot of learning to do in his new role, but CBS seemed to be willing to groom him slowly for a bigger role as a hole announcer" (GOLFWEEK.com, 7/28). GOLF DIGEST's Beall & Wacker noted Love "admitted that he found out just how difficult the job is." Love: "I found out it's hard to do. I was nervous on TV, surprisingly nervous." Beall & Wacker noted Love "grew increasingly frustrated by the challenges of the job and wary of the criticism and it showed." Love's attention also was "divided, as his Sea Island, Ga., house was consumed by fire in late March" (GOLFDIGEST.com, 7/28).
