WNBA Sky Launch Social Justice Campaign To Help Raise Money

WNBA Chicago Sky players have "launched a new social justice campaign, 'Sky Takes Action,' in which players will donate their own money -- based on game-day performance -- to five local organizations," according to Madeline Kenney of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. The plan is to "donate $10 for each point scored and an additional $100 for each win and $50 for each loss." Sky F Gabby Williams said that the donations "will be split equally from all players, who will pool their money every few weeks." The Sky "have already raised $980 for charity," and the team hopes their donations "will be matched by fans and sponsors and are encouraging fans to join the conversation using the hashtag #SkyTakesAction." Sky players also are "in discussion with the team's ownership group to see if they might contribute as well." The Sky "will promote the campaign throughout the season, with players wearing special warmups and gear." The team's website also will be "collecting donations" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 7/29). Williams said, "Before we even came to the bubble, this was the most important thing to us. How do we make an impact, how do we change what’s going on in the world right now, how do we navigate ourselves in this movement, how can we be a part of it? Before we even came to the bubble, we were having Zoom calls debating if we should even come, because this is the thing that's most important to us" (THEATHLETIC.com, 7/28).
