World Surf League Set For One-Day Team Event Next Month

The World Surf League will make its return next month with a one-day team event on Aug. 9. The Michelob Ultra Pure Gold Rumble at the Ranch will be a mixed doubles team competition held at the WSL Surf Ranch, an artificial wave pool in Lemore, Calif., designed by the Kelly Slater Wave Company. The final two hours of the competition will be broadcast on FS1. The first two hours will be aired on FS2, and the entire event will also be broadcast live on WSL’s website. In addition to title sponsor Michelob, event sponsors include Red Bull, Jose Cuervo and Jeep, among others. The spectator-less competition will feature 16 surfers, including Slater, Carissa Moore, Caroline Marks and Kolohe Andino. The full list of teams will be revealed during a selection show on WSL’s site on Aug. 4. Prize money will go to a charity selected by the winning team. Earlier this month, WSL canceled the remainder of the '20 season, with plans to revamp its championship format next year. The upcoming competition is the first stop of the WSL Countdown, a new series of regional exhibition events. Other upcoming competitions will take place in Australia, France and Portugal in September and October.
