Dr. Anthony Fauci’s First Pitch Sets Baseball Card Record

Topps has issued a trading card of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, throwing out the first pitch of the MLB season last week. The card was only available for 24 hours, under the company’s Topps Now brand, but it set a new record with 51,512 sold.

Topps Now, which launched in 2016, aims to turn highlight moments into collectibles. These cards are printed to order, but are only available for 24 hours, so the number produced can vary significantly. Another recent Topps Now card featured the San Francisco Giants’ Alyssa Nakken becoming the first female baseball coach to take the field during an MLB game; 4,781 of those were printed.
