College Notes: Red River Showdown Still Set For Cotton Bowl

Univ. of Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione said that the Red River Showdown featuring OU and Texas is "still targeted for its longtime home in Dallas." Castiglione: "We have a contract to play the game in the Cotton Bowl, and so at this point that’s what we plan to do" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 7/25).

FULL-TIME MEMBER? In Miami, Susan Miller Degnan reported the ACC is "expected to wait until next week to publicly reveal its format and possible starting dates" for the '20 football season. ACC presidents are "scheduled to meet Wednesday" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/25). The AP reported the ACC and Notre Dame are "considering whether the Irish will give up their treasured football independence to play as a member of the league for the 2020 season." Sources said that the ACC is "looking at an 11-game schedule that would include 10 conference games and start Sept. 12." There are "other models also being considered." Under the 10-plus-one plan, ND "would play a full ACC schedule" (AP, 7/24).

SEASON LOOKING LIKELY: In Austin, Cedric Golden wrote college football "feels like a reality." Golden: "If only the big dogs in the Big 12 and SEC would make a decision to give us a better idea of what’s to come schedule-wise. ... If the baseball, basketball, soccer, and golf guys can somehow make it work, why not football?" Football "doesn’t exactly lend itself to social distancing, but the powers that be appear to be forging ahead" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 7/25).
