Goldman Sachs Brings On Patrick Cantlay As First Athlete Endorser

Golfer Patrick Cantlay has partnered with Goldman Sachs to become the "first brand spokesperson for Marcus by Goldman Sachs," marking the "first-ever athlete sponsorship in the 150-year history of the firm," according to Kristi Dosh of FORBES. Marcus by Goldman Sachs is the "first-ever consumer business within Goldman Sachs." The video released as part of the campaign "gets personal and features Cantlay's father reading a letter to him." As it turns out, it is a letter his father "wrote to him when he started his professional career." Dustin Cohn, Head of Brand & Marketing for Goldman Sachs' Consumer & Investment Management division, said that this partnership is "only the first step in exploring how athletes and sports can help the brand accomplish its goal to create more awareness and help consumers improve financial wellness" (FORBES.com, 7/15). CNBC.com's Jabari Young reported Cantlay "will sport the bank's logo on his clothing during events as part of the sponsorship." The firm "did not reveal the agreement's financial terms but said it hopes to reach a long-term extension with Cantlay in the future." Cantlay, who won last year's Memorial Tournament, "will chase this weekend's title to be the second repeat winner of the event." Cohn: "We're leveraging that to debut our new ad on CBS" (CNBC.com, 7/13). The AP in February first reported the relationship between Cantlay and Goldman Sachs.

NEXT ON THE TEE: Golf apparel startup Boston Scott Golf signed a new multiyear partnership with golfer Scott Piercy. As part of the relationship, BSG and Piercy will collaborate on the apparel he will wear during all competitions, which will also be made available for golf fans worldwide to purchase (BSG).
