Golden Boy Thinking Outside The Box For Canelo Alvarez Bout Venue

Alvarez likely won't be fighting in front of fans when he eventually steps back into the ringGETTY IMAGES

Golden Boy Promotions Chair & CEO Oscar De La Hoya said that the company is "considering staging an outdoor fight in front of Mount Rushmore or on Alcatraz Island" for Canelo Alvarez, as his team is "trying to think outside the box with a rare opportunity to have an international sports star showcase his ability without a live audience," according to Andrew John of the Palm Springs DESERT SUN. The first Golden Boy Promotions fight card since February will take place on July 24 at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, Calif., with "unbeaten rising star" Vergil Ortiz Jr. as the main event headliner. Alvarez is "eyeing a return to the ring later this year," and De La Hoya on Tuesday confirmed that Fantasy Springs "just might be the site." In any other year, the "notion that the sport's largest icon and revenue generator would fight at a teeny venue that seats a couple thousand would be unthinkable." Alvarez "will very likely fight with no live crowd on hand if he steps back into the ring with restrictions in place," so it is of "little consequence where Alvarez's next bout is staged." John wrote Mount Rushmore or Alcatraz "would be creative places to stage a world class fight." But De La Hoya said that having Alvarez fight at Fantasy Springs "would be the easiest to pull off" (Palm Springs DESERT SUN, 7/14).
