Longtime USOC Media Figure Mike Moran Passes Away At 78

Moran was previously the SID at CU-Boulder from '68-78 before joining the USOPCUniv. of Colorado

MIKE MORAN, a longtime "sports media and public relations professional on the international stage," died yesterday afternoon at 78, according to Kate Shefte of the Colorado Springs GAZETTE. Moran "spent 25 visible years" with what is now called the USOPC. He retired in '03 as USOC Chief Communications Officer and spokesperson. He went on to serve as Colorado Springs Sports Corp. Senior Media Consultant. Moran was sports information director at the Univ. of Colorado-Boulder from '68-78 before joining the USOC in '79. He directed the USOC's public relations and media efforts for a quarter of a century spanning games from Lake Placid to Salt Lake City. Moran also assisted in the effort to "get the Olympics back to the U.S." in '12, serving as senior communications counselor for "NYC2012" for more than two years (Colorado Springs GAZETTE, 7/8). Moran in '02 "received the USOC's highest honor, the General Douglas MacArthur Award, and was inducted into the College Sports Information Director's Hall of Fame" (AP, 7/7).
