Sources: NFL Owners, Players Discuss How To Offset Loss Of Fans

The league stands to lose between $2-4B in revenue this season if fans are not on handgetty images

NFL owners and the NFLPA are considering playing the '20 regular season with "few or no fans in attendance and are actively discussing how to absorb lost revenue potentially worth billions," according to sources cited by Ken Belson of the N.Y. TIMES. The owners are "weighing with the union how to spread out the losses over several years by lowering the salary cap." At the same time, the owners are "exploring ways to increase revenue generated by each team, including expanding sponsorships and other local initiatives." Sources said that the owners "hope to reach an agreement with the union by the end of the month." Belson reported the league "stands to lose" between $2-4B in revenue this season "if fans are not on hand." The owners expect the players, who receive about 48% of league revenue, to "absorb a proportional amount of those losses" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/5).

WORRYING SILENCE: PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Mike Florio wrote if it "has a plan for effectively playing the 2020 season, the NFL is doing a very good job of keeping it quiet." Details "have been scarce" and teams "haven't gotten much guidance" (NBCSPORTS.com, 7/5).
