ATP, WTA Hoping To Create Bubble For Players Ahead Of Return

All singles players will be allocated no more than two hotel rooms to house them and their entire teamsGETTY IMAGES

The ATP and WTA tours plan to create a bubble for players within the TWA Hotel at N.Y.’s Kennedy Airport “that will serve as their base” for the two tournaments as part of tennis’ return, the Western & Southern Open and the U.S. Open, according to Joshua Robinson of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Both tournaments are taking place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Players will “encounter no fans or media, and they will exit the bubble only once they are eliminated.” Limited player entourages will be allowed at the two events, and it is “unlikely anyone would be allowed into the bubble halfway through.” Organizers will announce “how long players would need to be on site before the tournaments start once they release the details of their health protocol.” All singles players “will be allocated no more than two hotel rooms inside the bubble to house them and their entire teams.” Some players may rent nearby houses, but they still “will be subjected to rigorous testing to re-enter” the bubble (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 6/29).
