WooSox Officials Confident Polar Park Will Open On Time For '21

Triple-A Int'l League Worcester Red Sox officials "remain confident" that the new Polar Park can open on time for the '21 season, "despite all the project has endured so far," according to Michael Bonner of the Springfield REPUBLICAN. Worcester City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. last week said that he is "optimistic crews can make up for the seven weeks lost when work was put on hold due to the coronavirus." WooSox President Charles Steinberg yesterday addressed the ballpark's timeline for the first time. Steinberg said, "I try not to worry too much about that because we've got some brilliant people on the construction side who are going to see what they can do and how to overcome the seven-week delay that COVID caused" (MASSLIVE.com, 6/29).

ALL COMING TOGETHER: In Worcester, Bill Ballou notes those part of the media tour of the ballpark yesterday "got to see the start of dugouts, grandstands and the Worcester Wall in right field that promises to become one of Polar Park's signature structures." Much of the tour "happened above the wall on Summit Street, as it provides a great view of what Polar Park will look like and promises to be a magnet for fans." Polar Park architect Janet Marie Smith said that the ballpark is being "designed along the lines of some of baseball's classic parks from the 20th century," such as Ebbetts Field in Brooklyn, "getting away from what she called 'boomerang' grandstand seating." Smith added that the WooSox also are consulting with the Red Sox to "make sure Polar Park works as a development facility for their Triple A prospects" (Worcester TELEGRAM & GAZETTE, 6/30).
