Soccer star David Beckham has invested in Guild Esports. He will assume a co-owner position at the company, which plans to field teams in popular gaming titles such as FIFA, Rocket League and Fortnite.
Guild Esports plans to launch academy programs for youth esports players, and according to the company, Beckham will help develop coaching and provide mentorship.
“I know that determination lives in our esports athletes today and at Guild we have a vision to set a new standard, supporting these players into the future. We are committed to nurturing and encouraging youth talent through our academy systems and I am looking forward to helping our Guild Esports team grow,” Beckham said in a statement.
Guild is aiming to raise $30 million, according to the Financial Times. As well as Beckham’s investment, made through DB Ventures, the company also has funding from Blue Star Capital.
Beckham is also a co-owner and president of soccer operations of MLS club Inter Miami FC, and launched his own media production company in 2019 called Studio 99.
