Rogers Sports Supports Canadian Bill Allowing In-Game Betting

Rogers Sports & Media is supporting a bill that would allow Canadian fans to “wager legally on individual games -- and events unfolding within the game,” according to Sean Fitz-Gerald of THE ATHLETIC. Rogers President Jordan Banks said that the passage of Bill C-218 “would open the door for more betting-related advertising on Sportsnet’s traditional channels but that its true potential would be for those following the games on the company’s digital platforms.” The commissioners of all five major North American leagues operating in Canada “sent a joint letter to Ottawa earlier this month, announcing their support for the bill.” The Ontario government has also given its support. The bill could reach the Canadian Senate next year; if approved it “would be up to the provinces to determine how the betting could be implemented” (THEATHLETIC.com, 6/24).
