Orlando Pride Withdraws From NWSL Cup After Positive COVID-19 Tests

The Orlando Pride has withdrawn from the upcoming NWSL Challenge Cup following positive COVID-19 tests of asymptomatic players and staff. According to the team, six players and four staff members tested positive. With the tournament set to start on Saturday and these cases requiring a 14-day quarantine, the Pride did not believe it would be able to participate.

The team had not yet traveled to Sandy, Utah, for the competition. It said its training grounds at Sylvan Lake Park will now be closed for additional cleaning and sterilization. The team also made a point of saying that its facility is 44 miles away from Orlando City’s training grounds to mitigate concerns about their MLS counterparts.

The Orlando area will soon host MLS and NBA tournaments despite Florida’s surge of COVID-19 cases—the state reported a record of 4,049 new infections on Saturday. Meanwhile, Disney began reopening some of its resorts and campgrounds yesterday.
