MLS To Implement Lessons Learned From Bundesliga During Return

Bundesliga in May became the first of Europe's top leagues to resumeGETTY IMAGES

MLS officials plan to use some of the lessons they have learned from the Bundesliga's return when the league reconvenes for the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando next month. MLS Commissioner Don Garber said the German league has “done a really great job with testing, and really focused on how to operate those games in a way that is protecting their players and all of their staff.” Garber: "They’ve done some great things with technology, and we’re going to do that with our games as well. There will be more cameras at these games at the tournament than there would be at all of our other network partners.” He added there also will be additional audio elements and “unique virtual insertion technology.” Garber said the league is talking with fans “about how to include them in the process and can we do Zoom live interactions in our end zones.” That is something soccer leagues in other countries, such as Denmark, has utilized. Meanwhile, Garber said the MLS still plans on playing regular-season games following the Orlando tournament. He said, “We’re working in each local market. States are opening up, there are more public facilities that are beginning to open. ... I’m optimistic that in the fall we’ll be able to return to our home markets, complete our regular season as we can through crowning a champion” (“The Return of Sports,” ESPN, 6/15).
