Contract Keeps Jerry Richardson's Name On UNCC's Football Stadium

Jerry Richardson Stadium has been the football team's home since its '13 inceptionUNIV. OF NORTH CAROLINA - CHARLOTTE

UNC Charlotte's football stadium "will continue to bear the name" of former NFL Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson due to the terms of a naming-rights contract, according to David Scott of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. The Panthers "recently removed a statue of Richardson from the outside of Bank of America Stadium." UNCC kept Richardson's name on the stadium in '18, "following his sale of the Panthers to David Tepper after a months-long investigation into substantial claims of sexual and racial misconduct by Richardson." It appears the school has "no ability to change the name of Jerry Richardson Stadium," the football team's home since its '13 inception. The naming-rights contract, dated May 14, 2013, "outlines the financial terms of the agreement between Richardson and the school." There is "no morals clause in the contract that prohibits certain behavior by either party." The contract also states the stadium name and field name "will be used as primary identifiers in perpetuity for the life of the football complex." Richardson under the contract's terms "agreed to make" a $10M donation, "payable in 10 annual increments" of $1M from '13-22 (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 6/17).
