NBA, Magic Using Season Restart As Platform For Racial Injustice Issues

The NBA and the Magic are "vowing not to let the national discussion die out" on police brutality and racial injustice in the wake of George Floyd's death, and they "plan to use the resumption of play at ESPN Wide World of Sports as a massive forum to keep the issue in the national consciousness," according to Mike Bianchi of the ORLANDO SENTINEL. Magic CEO Alex Martins said, "This is about the entire NBA and our opportunity as a league to truly make substantive change and have an impact on racism and social injustice in our country. I think what you're going to see when the NBA comes to Orlando for the restart of the season is that we're going to use this as a platform to provide leadership in initiating significant change." Bianchi notes the Magic are "putting together an internal task force on racial injustice and conducted a staff town hall meeting on Tuesday" moderated by NBA Exec VP and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer Oris Stuart. Bianchi: "If only every business in this country were like the NBA and every leader was like NBA commissioner Adam Silver, the expansive racial divide in this country wouldn’t exist. ... I love the fact that the NBA is one of the few leagues that doesn't just pay lip service to racial issues" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/11).
