A's President Says Coliseum Could Open As Soon As Monday

A's President Dave Kaval said that the team is "working with Alameda County to open the Coliseum safely, and approval may come as soon as Monday," according to Susan Slusser of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Kaval also updated the status of the A's rent issue -- the yearly $1.25M payment, due April 1, which is "on hold because of a clause in the lease that allows for deferral if the building is not available for use." The A's are in "discussions with the Joint Powers Agency that governs the Coliseum," and if and when the team gets approval to work out there, it "will make its rent payment." Kaval said that there is "likely to be a rent reduction ... if there is a shortened season or no season." Kaval: "The current agreement is on a per-game basis. You pay the full amount and then there is adjustment based on how many games you play." Slusser notes with much of the local government shut down, the timeline to open a new ballpark "might be pushed beyond 2023." But Kaval said that the focus "remains [on] the Howard Terminal site, despite potential logistical and financial hurdles that might be deepened by the COVID-19 pandemic." Kaval said, "We are making real, discernible progress. Things might not be as visible but it's important for people to know we're moving forward with our waterfront ballpark" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/5).
