Michigan State Adding New Position For Chief Diversity Officer

Michigan State is adding a new position to its athletic department, as it “plans on posting the position of chief diversity officer” in the coming weeks, according to Matt Wenzel of MLIVE.com. MSU AD Bill Beekman noted the school is facing “very serious budget constraints” due to the coronavirus pandemic, but he said, “This position was one of five key priorities we identified in our strategic planning process last fall. It may be the only new position we post this year but it’s just simply too important to wait.” Beekman added that he will be “creating work groups for ‘how we change for the better’ and they will include current and former Michigan State athletes, coaches and staffers.” Wenzel notes the school also will “bring speakers and teachers to campus to educate the athletic department” (MLIVE.com, 6/4).
