Yankees, Mets Now Offering May Refunds, But Criticized For Methods

The Yankees caught up to other teams that notated the May games as impacted back on April 29GETTY IMAGES

The Yankees and Mets have "finally acknowledged that their May home games will not be made up in any way, shape or form," but fans still are "going to have to break a sweat" to obtain refunds, according to Ken Davidoff of the N.Y. POST. Both clubs yesterday released statements on their team websites announcing the "addition of May games to their 'Impacted' list, which previously included games scheduled for March and April." With the move, the Yankees and Mets "caught up to the Red Sox, among other major-league teams, who had notated the May games as impacted back on April 29." To obtain a refund, Yankees fans "must go toward the bottom of the relevant page, under 'Other Options.'" Mets patrons "should also look down to 'Additional Information,' where they will see a link to submit for a May refund" (N.Y. POST, 6/4).

NOT MAKING IT EASY: On Long Island, Tim Healey writes both clubs are "pushing fans to accepting bonus credit -- i.e., letting the teams hold on to the money -- instead of getting a refund." Other teams have "opted to issue automatic refunds as the first option, while also offering the choice of credits." The bonus credits come with "unspecified blackouts/restrictions/conditions, so it is not clear when fans would or would not be able to use that credit" (NEWSDAY, 6/4).
