Stricker: Decision On '20 Ryder Cup Coming In Two-Three Weeks

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker this week said a decision on the '20 installment scheduled for Sept. 25-27 will be made in the “next two to three weeks," according to Steve DiMeglio of GOLFWEEK. The event at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin "faces numerous obstacles created by the COVID-19 pandemic," meaning it "could be held as currently planned, could be held without spectators, or postponed until next year." Stricker said, “So far we’re planning as it’s a go, that we’re going to have it." But he hopes that it "doesn’t happen without fans." Stricker: "If it was without the fans it almost would be a yawner of an event. The passion, I don’t know if it would be there." Stricker said that construction of the infrastructure at Whistling Straits "would have to start pretty quickly if the event is held in September." He added, "The buildup to put up all the stands and all the corporate tents, all that kind of stuff, has to happen in June." On the possibility of postponing the Ryder Cup until '21, Stricker said, "They would just push everything back. That’s what happened at 9-11" (GOLFWEEK.com, 6/2). Meanwhile, European Tour CEO Keith Pelley said that his tour and the PGA will have "'conversations' about the Ryder Cup now that the revamped schedules of both tours have been announced." Pelley added there will be “a direction at the end of the month" (AP, 6/3).
