Oklahoma AD: School Will Stick To July 1 Return Despite Big 12 Vote

If OU players do need to travel, then they will be asked to keep track of where they've been GETTY IMAGES

Univ. of Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione "knew when his athletic department announced that it would reopen its facilities to football players beginning July 1 that the Sooners would get some criticism," but before the Big 12 approved voluntary workouts for June 15, school administrators "already had targeted a July 1 return, and they didn't feel like the extra two (or three) weeks provide much of an advantage," according to Andy Staples of THE ATHLETIC. Castiglione said that OU is "asking all athletes to take part in a 'virtual quarantine' for two weeks before returning to campus," and athletes will be "asked to try to limit their movements during that time." Staples noted if they do need to travel, then they will be "asked to keep track of where they've been and with whom they've come in contact." When they return to campus a few days before the facility opens, they will be "tested for COVID-19." The school already has "set aside one residential facility to use in case anyone tests positive and needs to be quarantined." As OU players return, Castiglione and four other Big 12 ADs "will be working to answer some pressing questions about the coming football season" (THEATHLETIC.com, 6/1).
