Take Two: A-Rod, J-Lo Once Again Look To Purchase Mets

Many Mets fans would welcome an ownership change, and the couple could be the most exciting suitorGETTY IMAGES

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez now are "working closely with very senior bankers at JPMorgan Chase on a new bid to buy the Mets after their initial approach failed to come together earlier this month," according to sources cited by Thornton McEnery of the N.Y. POST. Sources indicated that current Mets owners the Wilpon family have "become more eager than ever to unload the franchise thanks to COVID-19 making their precarious financial condition even more dire." McEnery reported a "strong signal of that desperation is the inclusion of SNY, the Mets’ television network, in a new deal." The club operates at a "major loss, relying on TV revenues to bridge the gap," which "makes owning the team without the network prohibitive." Sources now say that the Wilpons are "willing to part with enough of SNY to make a deal work but are insistent on keeping at least a slice of the network for themselves." McEnery reported two clients whom Rodriguez and Lopez have "apparently been speaking to" are Patriots Owner Robert Kraft and President Jonathan Kraft. Sources said that the Krafts "are not interested in buying a baseball team but are very intrigued by J-Rod’s plans for the Mets and Citi Field" (N.Y. POST, 5/30). USA TODAY's Chris Bumbaca wrote, "Krafts or not, Mets fans would happily welcome a change of ownership, and J-Rod may just be the most exciting suitor" (5/31).
