Warriors Expected To Open Chase Center Soon, Eyeing Workouts

The Warriors are "expected to follow city guidelines and reopen their facilities in the coming days," according to a source cited by Connor Letourneau of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The decision comes after S.F. Mayor London Breed’s announcement Thursday that the city "will allow professional sports practices, games and tournaments with no spectators beginning June 15." Since the arena shut down in mid-March, the "team has maintained that it would follow" Breed's lead "in terms of reopening for voluntary workouts." Under the city’s reopening guidelines, approved pro sports practices "can actually happen before June 15," and the Warriors "hope to get approval from a county health official to resume voluntary workouts, which could come as early as next week" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/29).

HANDS OF STONE: In S.F., Simon Campbell notes Chase Center GM Kim Stone is "deeply involved in discussions with the relevant authorities and industry bodies to plan for whatever comes next." Stone, hired from the Heat in April '19, "built her career on keeping people at large sporting venues safe and secure." Her time in Miami "overlapped with 9/11, the MERS epidemic and a Category 5 hurricane" (Irma in '17). For Stone, the coronavirus first came up in a Jan. 25 meeting. She said, “I was like, ‘OK, this is now. We have to stay ahead of this. We have to really ramp this up to the next level.’” Stone added of the logistical chaos brought on by the virus, “We saw this coming” (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/29).
