Liverpool's Tom Werner Talks Potential EPL Restart Amid Virus

Liverpool Chair TOM WERNER hopes the club will "soon be back to entertaining" by becoming EPL champions, even "if a little later than expected," according to Rob Harris of the AP. Werner said of when the EPL may return, "There’s going be a tiny element of risk, but this is a very healthy group ... and there’s going to be frequent testing." He added, "Most importantly, if the scientists and the government feel it’s unsafe, then there will be no football. But hopefully we can figure out a way to play." Werner still does hope that home stadiums "can be used for matches -- rather than neutral venues being advocated by police." But Harris noted that "requires fans abiding by social distancing and avoiding the temptation of gathering outside to get as close to the action as possible." Werner: "This is going be up to the government, but their primary goal is the safety of everybody. I hope (the games) are played in the home stadiums." Meanwhile, Harris noted Werner this week will be "helping to fill the football void and provide some light relief when 'The First Team,' a comedy series he has executive produced for the BBC, debuts on British screens" (AP, 5/22).
