Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs Talks Budget Strains Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Rutgers women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer had her annual salary cut by 10%GETTY IMAGES

Rutgers AD Patt Hobbs "has no idea" how much money his athletic department will receive for the '20-21 budget, according to Tom Canavan of the AP. The department last year got roughly $100M, one of the "lowest sports budgets" in the Big Ten conference. The coming FY is "cloudy," as New Jersey, which provides 17% of the school budget, has "seen its coffers drained fighting the virus." The Big Ten distribution to its 14 members "has been reduced because the NCAA canceled its basketball tournament in mid-March." Rutgers, which joined the conference in '14, "won't qualify for a full share" until the '21-22 academic year. Hobbs said that "nothing is off the table in overcoming them." He has "taken a 5% pay cut," and football coach Greg Schiano, men's basketball coach Steve Pikiell and women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer have "had their annual salaries cut 10%." Canavan noted no sports programs "have been eliminated." However, there is the "potential to match what Tulane did after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and possibly suspend programs for a year or two" (AP, 5/21).
