49ers Look To Out-Of-State Training Camp Options Amid Restrictions

The 49ers have held camp at their team site in Santa Clara since the summer of '08GETTY IMAGES

The 49ers are "exploring out-of-state locations to hold their training camp this summer in the event California hasn't significantly loosened safety restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic," according to Eric Branch of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The team is "scheduled to open camp in late July" at its facility in Santa Clara, the site of their camp since '08. But Santa Clara County's stay-at-home order is "in place through the end of May and could be extended." The 49ers "aren't close to making a decision, but are examining contingency plans." They "haven't said what states are being explored, but Arizona is a logical candidate because of its neighboring locale and more relaxed guidelines" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/15).

FLY SOUTH: Ravens President Dick Cass said that the team "could explore" moving training camp to an out-of-state site. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Wednesday announced that "restrictions on gatherings of more than 10 people remain in effect." But Cass and team officials have been "optimistic that training camp will start, as scheduled, in late July." In Baltimore, Jonas Shaffer notes the team has "held camp at their team facility in Owings Mills" since '11. Cass said, "When we think about the option of trying to move our training camp outside Maryland, we don't like that option. We think that we can conduct training camp outside Maryland, we don't like that option. We think that we can conduct training camp safely in Maryland." He added, "But if circumstances don't allow that, we will explore the options that are available to us." Cass "doesn't expect players to return to the team facility until training camp" (BALTIMORE SUN, 5/15).
