Pitt Coaches, Pro Teams Donate $800,000 To Fund Vaccine Research

The families of Pitt football coach Pat Narduzzi, men’s basketball coach Jeff Capel, women’s basketball coach Lance White and AD Heather Lyke made a "combined $500,000 donation to Pitt’s Center for Vaccine Research," which is "working to develop a vaccine for the novel coronavirus." The Steelers, Penguins and Pirates each "donated $100,000, as well, for a grand total of $800,000" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 5/7). 

PACKERS NEWS: Former NFLer Donald Driver tomorrow from 6:00am-6:00pm CT will be "teaming up with radio station 97.3 FM The Game in Milwaukee and Network Health to hold the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame Radiothon for COVID-19 Relief" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 5/7). Meanwhhile, the Packers'20th annual Green & Gold Charity Softball Game scheduled for June 7 has been "postponed because of COVID-19 concerns and scheduling issues."  A new date has "not been determined" for the event at Neuroscience Group Field in Fox Cities Stadium (Appleton POST-CRESCENT, 5/7).

MORE GOOD STUFF: New Balance is teaming up with its athletes, including tennis player Milos Raonic, U.S. sprinter Sydney McLaughlin and Bruins D Zdeno Chara, among others, to donate more than $1M worth of footwear to front line medical workers (THE DAILY)....Sabres C Jack Eichel "donated 250 bouquets of flowers to the nurses at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center" (BUFFALO NEWS, 5/7)....T'Wolves rookie C Naz Reid yesterday "donated more than 200 meals" to the staff at Hackensack Meridien Hospital in Neptune, N.J. (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 5/7).....Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar officials yesterday announced a "three-day virtual auction from May 22-24 that will include a variety of unique IndyCar and IMS-centric fan experiences, with proceeds going to three non-profits that are on the front lines of battling the effects of the coronavirus pandemic: the American Red Cross, the All Clear Foundation and Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 5/7).
