Bundesliga Runs 1,724 COVID-19 Tests in Push to Restart Season

The German football league is hoping to get government approval to restart its season this month (without fans in attendance). As part of that push, the organization has been testing players and staff across 36 clubs in the Bundesliga and its second division, the 2. Bundesliga. Yesterday, the German football league announced that it had detected 10 positive COVID-19 cases in its first round of 1,724 tests. Bundesliga club FC Cologne also announced three positive results among its staff and players on Saturday. Tim Meyer, the German football association’s head physician, is backing plans to restart games. But in an interview on Germany’s Sport1 TV channel on Saturday, Meyer warned, “If there are too many positive cases, this system can certainly falter.”
