UNC Names Football Field Following Largest Donation Ever

The North Carolina football program will benefit "from the biggest financial gift in the history of UNC athletics," as the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation has "made a 'transformational commitment' ... that will honor their son, Chris, while providing funding needs for staffing, facility improvements and in building an endowment to cover future operating costs in the program," according to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. The exact amount of the donation was not disclosed, but the "playing field at Kenan Stadium will be named Chris Smith Field." The Smith family has "previously made major gifts" that have benefited various projects within the athletics department. The family also has donated to different academic outlets, including the UNC School of Medicine and the Kenan-Flagler Business School (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 5/5).
