Mets, Yankees Face Some Backlash For Ticket Refund Policies

Both the Mets and Yankees made refund information more difficult to find than credit informationGETTY IMAGES

The Mets and Yankees in "coordinated and largely similar ticket policies" released Thursday "accounted only for games that were scheduled to have been played through then, 16 dates each at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium," according to Tim Healey of NEWSDAY. The clubs "pushed fans toward accepting credit for already-paid-for tickets, good for future purchases, but also offered refunds." Through Thursday evening, 21 of 28 ticket refund policies in MLB "account for at least some and usually all of May," leaving the Mets and Yankees "in the April-only minority with the Indians, Twins, Rangers, Brewers and Dodgers." Additionally, both the Mets and Yankees "made refund information more difficult to find than credit information." For the Mets, "'refund' doesn't appear until the 1,175th word of the 1,284-word ticket policy, at the bottom under 'Additional Information.'" The Yankees "tucked it in three-quarters of the way down under 'Other Options'" (NEWSDAY, 5/1). In N.Y., Ken Davidoff writes the Mets and Yankees' ticket policies "could have been worse," but "shouldn't we expect much better from these franchises?" Pro sports teams are "not small businesses." Davidoff: "They are built to last. To serve as community leaders and help those in trouble. And we are in trouble to the tune of about a 20 percent unemployment rate in this country" (N.Y. POST, 5/1).

REFUNDS OFFERED: The Dodgers on Thursday said that they are "offering account credits or -- with an additional step -- refunds to people who bought tickets through the organization to March and April home games." In L.A., Jorge Castillo notes the public rollout of the message "caused some confusion," as an outline of the policy on the team’s website "initially did not include the word refund." The policy "does not include single-game tickets purchased through third-party re-sellers such as StubHub" (L.A. TIMES, 5/1).
