AAC Officials Discuss Scenarios For Upcoming Football Season

Some proposals being floated include a shortened season or only conference gamesGETTY IMAGES

AAC officials "believe it will take anywhere from six to eight weeks to prepare" for the start of football season, as that is the "recommendation from a small task force created by the league to review football decisions," according to Matt Murschel of the ORLANDO SENTINEL. AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco said, "That's assuming you can do it. We don't know if we'll have a green light or if we start later in September or October." Murschel notes the working group "consists of Cincinnati football coach Luke Fickell, Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield, Tulane AD Tory Dannen, Temple AD Pat Kraft and conference officials." The goal is to "discuss various scenarios for a potential football season once the coronavirus pandemic is under control." Some proposals that have been floated around the country include "playing a shortened season, dropping nonconference matchups or moving the season from the fall to the winter or spring." Meanwhile, on the call with Vice President Mike Pence earlier this week, Aresco said, "He was interested in what we were doing and what we needed to do before we could start playing again should we get the green light to start back up." He added, "We're making contingency plans for anything you can possibly think of. That's what you must do. I will tell you this, the financial considerations have been important but secondary to how to get the kids back safely" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 4/17).
