Greenbrier Event Permanently Removed From PGA Tour Schedule

Tournament organizers said it was hurt from its move to the fall from around Independence DayGETTY IMAGES

The Greenbrier and the PGA Tour have "mutually agreed to cancel the remainder of the resort's contract with the association," which was scheduled to run through '26, according to Derek Redd of the CHARLESTON GAZETTE-MAIL. What started as The Greenbrier Classic and became A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier now ends with last year's tournament, as The Greenbrier and the Tour decided that this year's event "would be canceled for its Sept. 7-13 date" as part of the reworked golf schedule. The Safeway Open in Napa, Calif., announced yesterday that it would "run on that date." Before last year, the event had run around July 4, and The Greenbrier in a release said that with the tournament's "move from the Independence Day weekend to the fall, 'the attractiveness for sponsors and the attendance for fans dropped significantly.'" Redd notes the tournament "took a crushing blow" in '16 when it was "forced to cancel due to the heavy flooding throughout West Virginia that severely impacted Greenbrier County" (CHARLESTON GAZETTE-MAIL, 4/16).
