Five states had ongoing construction projects for major sports teams when the COVID-19 pandemic precipitated stay-at-home mandates, and some locations are dealing with the lockdown differently than others. California and Nevada have treated the construction of SoFi Stadium and Allegiant Stadium, respectively, as essential business operations. Despite workers at each site succumbing to positive diagnoses of the coronavirus, construction continues at both locations. Ohio, an early adopter of shelter-in-place directives, is allowing the development of West End Stadium (FC Cincinnati) and New Columbus Crew Stadium to advance with no site employees contracting the novel coronavirus. The Islanders' Belmont Park Arena -- in proximity to N.Y. , a current hotbed for the virus -- was deemed a non-essential operation at the end of March by state Gov. Andrew Cuomo and stopped construction. In Seattle -- where the first cases of the virus in the U.S. surfaced -- the $930M KeyArena renovation project has continued. City officials in Austin halted construction on Austin FC Stadium, while Arlington is allowing Globe Life Field work to continue in spite of a confirmed case of coronavirus on site.
