NBCUniversal Promotes Olympic Hopefuls In Social Media Campaign

NBCUniversal has "continued to promote athletic hopefuls in a series of social media posts" that feature them "training during isolation at home," according to Ann-Christine Diaz of AD AGE. The #EverydayAthletics videos on the NBC Olympics Instagram and Twitter accounts show the "inventive, silly and arguably not very effective ways the athletes have been trying to keep their muscles in shape." They include triathlete Yasmin Rieger, who "practices swimming sans pool by propping herself up on a stool and attaching her arms to resistance bands  -- while someone splashes her with water." NBC commentators Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines are heard "analyzing the form of swimmer Mary Pruden, who practices the medley in her inflatable backyard pool." The push "began organically, with athletes posting their isolation workouts onto social media." Then, the NBCUniversal team "worked with its commentators and others to build on the momentum." Though the Tokyo Games have been pushed back, NBC Sports Group CMO & Exec VP/Content Strategy Jenny Storms said that the net's marketing plans "will continue to be a 24/7, 365-days-a-year push." Storms said, "We will prep to celebrate 'One Year Out' on July 23 as well as other important milestones" (ADAGE.com, 4/7).
