Redskins Waive Training Camp Fee From Richmond In New Deal

The Redskins are entering the final year of their deal to have training camp in Richmondgetty images

The most controversial part of the deal to bring Redskins training camp to Richmond is "no more," as the team "waived the cash payment that the Richmond Economic Development Authority had been making to the team," according to a front-page piece by Michael Phillips of the RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH. This change is "part of a new agreement that could pave the way to extending the deal, this time without a monetary exchange." The Redskins have held their preseason training sessions in Richmond every year since '13 "under a contract where the EDA paid $500,000 annually in goods, services and cash to help cover the team's expenses." The team "will no longer require a cash payment," but the EDA "will still make non-monetary contributions." Phillips notes the move "represents a change in approach" for the team. For the city and EDA, the Redskins "coming to town on their own dime is a much easier sell." The EDA "still owed the Redskins $161,767 for coming to Richmond during last year's camp, but the team has waived that payment." The negotiations "had been in the works since before the COVID-19 crisis." The Redskins are entering the final year of the contract to bring camp to Richmond, and the sides "have had preliminary discussions about an extension" (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 4/4).
