The Padres have "agreed to divvy up" $1M among the "hundreds of ushers, ticket takers, and concessions, security and janitorial workers" involved in gameday operations at Petco Park, according to Lori Weisberg of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Even more, the team yesterday announced that "not only are they going to dole out financial assistance to their own employees but also to the game-day workers employed by third-party contractors who staff" the ballpark. While the majority of the $1M -- about $800,000 -- will "go directly to Padres workers, $100,000 is being set aside for Delaware North, whose employees staff the concessions stands; $50,000 to Aramark, which handles janitorial services; and an additional $50,000 to Elite Security" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/1).
CONCESSION QUESTIONS: In L.A., Bill Shaikin notes working for third-party concession companies and not the Dodgers or Angels "complicates" the situation for those affected gameday staffers. MLB owners have "reached agreements on how to compensate players in the majors and minors." A league official said that Commissioner Rob Manfred "successfully leaned on owners to retain all full-time employees at least through April 30." Shaikin notes Dodgers concession workers are "employed by Levy Restaurants," while Angels concession workers are "employed by Legends." Both companies have "advised those workers to file for unemployment." The MLBPA has "launched a petition calling on the Dodgers and Angels to follow the lead of Staples Center and its tenants -- the Lakers, Clippers and Kings -- in agreeing to pay workers for all canceled games this season." The Angels said that they are "actively considering how to assist game-day workers, including consultation with Legends on how to help concession workers." Dodgers VP/HR Marilyn Davis said, "We expect that a majority, if not all, hourly positions of organization employees at Dodger Stadium will experience either a further reduction of hours ... or will experience a temporary suspension of work" (L.A.
