Nike Says Coronavirus Delaying Discovery In Kawhi Leonard Suit

Leonard contends Nike copyrighted his 'Klaw’ personal logo that he says he created in collegeNBAE/GETTY IMAGES

Nike still has not "turned over any of the documents" Clippers F Kawhi Leonard’s lawyers requested as part of discovery in his lawsuit against Nike over who "owns rights to his personal 'Klaw' logo," according to Maxine Bernstein of the Portland OREGONIAN. When a federal judge Thursday "asked both sides if they can complete the sharing of documents by June, Nike balked, citing the athletic footwear company’s closure of its campuses due to the coronavirus pandemic." Nike "sought a delay of the case pending a court ruling on its motion to dismiss Leonard’s case," but U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mosman on Thursday "denied the company’s requests to delay the case any further and ordered discovery to begin immediately." Leonard sued Nike in the middle of the NBA Finals in June, "contending the company unlawfully copyrighted his 'Klaw’ personal logo that he says he conceived and created in college, drawing on his large hands, his jersey number and initials." Both sides will "meet again in a hearing by phone next month" (Portland OREGONIAN, 3/27).
