Slowed By Virus, Work Continues On Sports Facilities Across Country

All non-essential employees are working from home on SoFi, scheduled to open July 25GETTY IMAGES

Construction on the new SoFi Stadium in L.A. is "forging ahead," and renovations at Dodger Stadium also "continue, though both could change if more strict orders are given" by lawmakers in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Cassandra Negley of YAHOO SPORTS. All non-essential employees are "working from home" on SoFi, which is scheduled to open on July 25 with a Taylor Swift concert. Meanwhile, Dodgers President & CEO Stan Kasten said workers at Dodger Stadium are "fully compliant with all of the regulations of the county, city and state." He noted that the field-facing renovations are "done," though production has "slowed in recent days since fewer workers are there due to the delayed season and pandemic measures" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 3/26).

HOME IN Q1: In Jacksonville, Garry Smits reported despite the PGA Tour "shutting down its events through most of May," construction on its $65M "Global Home" continues. The 187,000-square-foot building will "serve as the new headquarters for the Tour and more than 800 employees." PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said that the building was "on target for a move-in by Jan. 1." But PGA Tour VP/Integrated Communications Kirsten Sabia "built some leeway into that timetable in her statement, understandable given how fast developments regarding the virus have moved." Sabia said, "We have no indication of substantial delays at this time, and are still hopeful for a Q1 move-in" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 3/26).

WORKING IN OHIO: In Cincinnati, Wartman & Coolidge reported while concerts and sporting events have stopped, construction on FC Cincinnati's new stadium is "still ongoing." The club's VP/Communications Lizz Summers confirmed that the West End project is "ongoing." The 26,000-seat, soccer-specific stadium is set to open in March '21 (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 3/26).
